Transposition
Posted by calamarain

Note to self. When setting a comic to auto update at midnight, do not transpose the 0 and the 3.

This comic was set to appear on the 30th of October, not the 03rd as it should be. And thus it's late.

I've clearly been doing too much typing :S My fingers hate me.

An apology
Posted by calamarain

Ladies and gentlemen, I must apologise for today's comic. I have valiantly resisted the temptation to do a comic including lolcats or other internet memes, but the photo of the adorable cat looking at my comic (apparently she's called Poppy) pushed me over the edge and I had to do this one.

I am so very very sorry and humbly promise never to do it again, even under threat of dismemberment. We will return to our normally cynical and bitter comics tomorrow.

The Best Angband Fan Ever
Posted by calamarain

Ladies and gentlemen, I was just sent this pic.

May I introduce you to my favourite fan of the comic, ever?

Isn't she lovely? She's looking at this strip

ToME
Posted by calamarain

Yes, we're having a guest variant for the next two weeks. ToME, as in Troubles of Middle Earth, a rather good variant that's diverged a lot from the original Angband.

Comic Schedule Change - now 3 days/week
Posted by calamarain

OK, I am very very sorry.

As some of you may know, I have lots of last minute labwork to do at the moment, writing papers, and writing up. Thus, I have less time to devote to outside activities. Going to the pub. Eating out. Playing games. Doing artwork. All that stuff.

Unfortunately, that includes this comic. The comic is NOT going on hiatus, but the release schedule will be decreasing from 5 days a week down to Mon-Wed-Fri releases, so there'll only be 3 comics a week.

Very sorry about that, but the thesis does come first. Once it's fully done and written up, I hope to be able to come back up to 5 strips a week.

Next Version
Posted by calamarain

If you don't know already... the next version of Angband has finally been released! 3.0.8 with some quite big changes is now out, and may be downloaded from the Angband homepage, here at Rephial.

There's a few little bugs in it, but a bugfix version should be out in a few weeks at most.

NetHack tournament
Posted by calamarain

Yep, it's June again. Which means that Eidolos is running the 2007 June NetHack tournament. This isn't the devnull one that runs in November, it's second one. It's played at nethack.alt.org and all details are at the 2007 June NetHack tournament at nethack.alt.org

I'm not going to be playing as much this year as I did last year, thesis writeup is looming, but I did design the trophy art for people to win. So go participate, good luck, and make sure to spread Angband propoganda ;-)

Break
Posted by calamarain

Taking a break from comics next week. Fortunately, there's guest strips to fill the gap. Series of five by Martin Bazley. Paying tribute (or lovingly ripping off :) to several earlier comics.

Congratulations to him on being appointed the new maintainer of vanilla Angband. Long may the game prosper under his leadership! He's currently also trying to GPL Angband, so if you have worked on *any* aspect of Angband and contributed any code/stuff at all to it then contact him if you've not done so already.

The new official Angband page is here.

DROD and buffers
Posted by calamarain

EDIT: Fixed the link. Whoopsy. Thanks to GreyKnight for pointing it out. I've boosted up the comics buffer, so there's no danger of me running out. It's back up to 35, and I have a few good ideas for more strips. I confess that I've done another series of 5 as a storyline - normally I don't like to do this. Having individual comics stand alone means that there has to be a unique idea for every comic (variations on a theme like the Angband Etiquette Guide, and And Now, A Word From Our Sponsors not withstanding). But this idea just grabbed me, so I did it :) It's partially based on a real life incident.

Most of my free time has been taken up by DROD (Deadly Rooms of Death) though. It's a puzzle game with addictive qualities, and something that endeared it to my heart a lot - a level editor. This means that people can create their own. As is often the case with things like this, about 90% of the dungeons created are mediocre at best. However, at least 10% are comparable to the original game, and sometimes even better. This means that you don't just get the game itself, you get about 8-9 times the game size :) I bought the commercial editions (Journey to Rooted Hold, and King Dugan's Dungeon), but the slightly older "Architect's Edition" is still freeware. It's still King Dugan's Dungeon, but being the older version it doesn't have the upgraded graphics or voice acting. It *can* still run any user-made dungeon that wasn't specifically made for Journey to Rooted Hold.

It's addictive. I've completed KDD, and am about halfway through JTRH, and am designing my own dungeon, with help from a couple of friends. Let's hope it's in the 10% :P

Buffer slippage
Posted by calamarain

OK, having a buffer of 40 strips was probably one of the best decisions I made with regard to this comic. 15 months after I started it, and the buffer has only slipped to 25. I still draw, but not quite as fast as the depletion rate. What I need really, is one weekend where I think up and draw 20 strips. Though there won't be time for one of them in the near future!

Roguelike fanworks
Posted by calamarain

I've finally got round to starting it. The roguelike fanart archive. Originally, I wanted to create it to be a gallery for my own work - I've done quite a bit of Angband and NetHack art, as well as a random ADOM story.

Now, it's actually up and running, and doesn't just contain my stuff. The idea is for it to contain virtually all the fanworks for any roguelike!

So, if you've written a story, drawn a picture, made a movie, whatever, as long as it's about or from a roguelike game, I'd like to host a copy of it. Get in touch with me if you want it up there!

EDIT: Archive no longer available
